CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The Way Life Is – Maine Working Families And Communities
is an exhibit planned for February 2019 at the UMVA Gallery on Congress Street in Portland. Two- and three-dimensional work of any media (paintings, wood block prints, photographs, sculptures, fabric, etc.) will be considered for exhibition. Artists around Maine, from Kittery to Fort Kent and from Rangeley to Eastport, are encouraged to submit up to three pieces (see submission requirements below) to this juried exhibit (juror TBA soon). Artists are asked to respond to the curator’s statement below.
Submission Requirements (please read curator statement above first):
- Submit up to three images of work in any medium (images must be 1500 pixels on the smaller side) by January 4 (2019) at midnight.
- Label the images with title, artist name, medium/a, dimensions, year, price or NFS (eg. paleolithic workplace/Fred Flintstone/ gelatin silver photographic print/18”x24” framed/2018/ NFS – or price in $). Please enter labels in the space for naming the image.
-Send an artist bio (up to 250 word-processed words) with the images to be included in a binder for the visitors to the exhibit.
-Submit an artist statement (no more than 150 word-processed words) to be included in an exhibit binder as well.

Artists will be notified of selections by January 14, 2019. The exhibition will open on February 1 and close on February 22, 2019. Delivery of selected works of art with paper copies (8.5×11 paper size) of artist bio and statement to the UMVA Gallery, 516 Congress Street in Portland will be Jan. 26, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Artists must pick up art on Feb. 23, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Curator’s statement:
Maine is often seen as two states. There are coastal communities dependent on wealthy summer residents and several million tourists. Amidst the extraordinary wealth often found on its coast, though, there is another Maine. Most Maine people, from the Atlantic to the interior, are involved in wage employment that provides the production and services on which all of us in the state depend.
Across Maine hard-working people are employed in logging, factories, construction, fishing, agriculture, restaurants, area supermarkets, area nursing homes and clinics, hospitals, automobile gas-and-repair stations and more. Periods of unemployment and underemployment are common since these enterprises are especially vulnerable to national and global markets and government policies. Substandard housing is common. Many children qualify for subsidized school lunches and opiate-addiction affects hundreds of young people. College education and training for the trades are often out of reach.
Even in Maine’s larger towns and cities it remains difficult for many people to find living-wage work. While abandoned factory buildings are repurposed as apartments and condominiums, restaurants and breweries, and farmers’ markets and art galleries, these investments create relatively few long-term good-paying jobs.
“The Way Life Is” is an opportunity for artists throughout Maine to produce critical work addressing the loss of many living-wage jobs and the lagging recovery from the Great Recession (2008-2012) that continues to make it extremely difficult for most Maine people to achieve their full potential. In our efforts and work we must also find ways to celebrate their lives and work, revealing the dignity of people and families making a living and producing culture despite the challenges.
Thoughtful, provocative and respectful portrayals of “The Way Life Is” provides a positive message and becomes part of an essential and vital popular platform for progressive political voices and forces dedicated to making policy changes that benefit all Maine’s people. UMVA members are invited to submit artwork for inclusion in the Fall Members Exhibition at the Portland Gallery.* Artworks in most media (except Performance and Installation) will be accepted.**
Guidelines for submission:
- Send by email to – studiomuseo7@gmail.com– by Sunday, October 21, 2018 a photo of the artwork(s) with Title, Date, Medium, Size and Selling Price (if applicable),
- Prepare an Artist Statement and/or Bio that includes an image of your submitted work to deliver with your art, to be included in the exhibition deskbook.

UMVA at PMC Exhibit Application 2019 Season
The UMVA Gallery at PMC (Portland Media Center) accepts proposals to exhibit work from all visual artists and curators. We schedule monthly exhibitions throughout the year. The UMVA Portland Chapter executive board and its membership seek to exhibit artists from diverse ages and backgrounds. We particularly encourage young and immigrant artists living in Maine to propose and exhibit fresh and dynamic work. Exhibits of more than one artist are considered as well.
The UMVA Gallery at PMC exhibits works of individual artists, juried shows by guest curators and open exhibits of its members’ work. Located in the heart of the “arts district” on Congress Street, our gallery offers ample space for visual artists and curators with the energy and quality of work to have an impact in Portland’s art scene.
It is advisable for the Curator/Coordinator to visit the gallery space to see the layout and amount of wall space available. All wall-hung types of artworks can be accommodated. Free-standing sculpture must be positioned against a gallery wall (Fire Code). UMVA does not have sculpture plinths and equipment for video art would have to be supplied by the proposed exhibit’s Curator/Coordinator.
Note: Since the UMVA Portland Chapter is funded only by its members annual dues, it does not have the financial resources to underwrite any artist or curator’s exhibit. Of course, in exceptional cases, the UMVA Portland Chapter may assist the artist or curator in finding needed financial support.

Exhibition Proposal Information and Review Process:
- Submission of a one-page description of the proposed exhibit accompanied by 5 digital images. The proposal should also indicate preferred month for exhibiting as well as curatorial and publicity plans for presenting and publicizing the exhibit (specific curatorial and adequate publicity plans enhance the success of the proposal). UMVA Gallery at PMC can providepress release samples and press contacts. In addition, UMVA offers a $100 reimbursement for receipted expenses related to posters and publicity).

- Attendance at the UMVA Portland Chapter meeting the month prior to the exhibit, during the month of the exhibit and the month following the exhibit: this facilitates ongoing evaluation of the Gallery’s exhibits.
- Arrangement for hanging and taking down the show as well as filling nail holes and painting walls.
- Arrangement for light food and beverages for the exhibit opening.
- Provision of a brief report or commentary on the exhibit, the space and other matters to be submitted in writing at the monthly meeting following the exhibit.
- The Curator/Coordinator is responsible for the arrangement of the schedule for sitting the exhibit during hours the Gallery is open – at a minimum, Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1-4pm.
- The UMVA Portland Chapter will share the exhibit proposal with its membership and reply by email with its decision in four weeks from the time of the proposal presentation. If proposed exhibit is accepted, the exhibitor is expected to be/become a member of the UMVA and agree to share 25% of the exhibit sales with UMVA Portland Chapter.
Note: UMVA is not liable for damage or theft of artworks and curators and artists are invited to insure their own work if desired. Keys, security details and other PMC regulations addressed with artist/curator.

“Summertime” Exhibition – Deadline July 7 – 4pm
River Arts in Damariscotta is inviting artists throughout Maine to submit artwork for jurying in its upcoming exhibition, “Summertime”. Artists can submit up to three works in any medium including sculpture, photography, collage, painting, ceramics, fiber and fine craft – representational or abstract. Work can be delivered anytime during gallery hours until the deadline, which is Saturday, July 7 at 4 p.m. An opening reception will be held from 5-7 p.m., Friday, July 13 5-7 pm.
Juror will be Bob Keyes. Bob Keyes writes about the visual and performing arts for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. He appreciates that his job requires him to visit museums and attend plays and concerts across Maine, and most enjoys interviewing artists in their studios.

The upcoming July exhibit at the UMVA Gallery is an open show for members. This is an opportunity for UMVA members to share what they are doing with other members and the public. This year we wish to simplify the process for our volunteer curators. Please carefully comply with the steps below to confirm your participation in the show.
- We ask that you select one of your best pieces(all media accepted; if a plinth is needed for a sculptural piece, please let us know) and deliver that single piece to the UMVA Gallery on Saturday, June 30, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The gallery is located in the Portland Media Center at 516 Congress Street in Portland.
- Also, let us know of your participation by sending your name, the title of your piece, its medium, its dimensions, date of completion and price(or NFS if it’s not for sale) on or before June 15 to Nancy Kureth at n3kureth@gmail.com
We must have all of the above information to confirm your participation. It will enable us to print a professional label for you work. In April, the creative voices and talents of more than a dozen immigrant artists living in greater Portland will be exhibited at the Union of Maine Visual Artists Gallery. Seventeen artists collaborated with curators Kifah Abdulla (poet and painter from Iraq), Titi de Baccarat (sculptor and painter from Gabon) and John Ripton (photographer, writer and historian) to create work that expresses their experience as Maine immigrant artists.

Art for Science Rising is a special nationwide project that is undertaking to award grants for public art installations that underscore why science is vital to our democracy and inspire people to take action and stand up for science. The Youth Activism Gathering is a youth led and run three day long
gathering of politically conscious youth, organizers, and activists who

Launches Website and Screening Tour
J. Fred Woell: An American Vision, the 17th episode in the Maine Masters series of films on Maine’s exceptional artists, has just launched a website www.jfredwoellfilms.org <http://www.jfredwoellfilms.org> and is in the planning stages of a national screening tour.
This documentary by Richard Kane with Robert Shetterly premiered at the Camden International Film Festival and is slated to screen in May 2018 at the annual conference of the Society for North American Goldsmiths (SNAG), co-sponsored by Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. The film will screen theatrically throughout Maine in 2018 as well as at many museums, universities, national craft shows and conferences.
The film is about this Deer Isle, ME political artist who made satirically searing commentary often on the dark side of history. A humble and humorous artist and teacher, Woell opened the door to seeing anew.

Fred Woell: An American Vision captures the essence of a man who believed deeply in the power of the creative spirit. As an artist he was an innovator and a rule-breaker. As a teacher he encouraged his students to make their own discoveries. It’s appropriate to have American featured in the title of this film, for Fred’s vision was uniquely American: he had a deep belief in democratic ideals combined with common-sense ingenuity in making work or repairing the world around him. While he could see the inconsistencies and flaws of his own country, he could also evoke in us our potential to make a better world. For Fred, making that better world began with his hands in the studio. In this inspiring film we are fortunate to witness a part of that journey.

Ellis-Beauregard Fellowship in the Visual Arts
The Ellis-Beauregard Foundation through the generosity of its founders, artists John David Ellis and Joan Beauregard, is offering a newly created $25,000 unrestricted fellowship to a Maine visual artist. The award will be made in recognition of exceptional original work which adds to Maine’s renowned cultural lexicon. In addition the awardee will be granted a solo exhibition at CMCA. CMCA director Suzette McAvoy and Ellis-Beauregard Foundation director Donna McNeil announced the partnership at the Foundation’s inaugural reception in Rockland on September 27, 2017. As the largest public garden in southern New England, Heritage averages 132,000 visitors a year. We are ranked among the top 20 museums in Massachusetts. : The Atrium Art Gallery at University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College (USM) is hosting an exhibition, Industrial Maine: Our Other Landscape, a group show of 2D and 3D Art and is seeking artists whose work is focused on Maine’s industrial landscape. (March 12 – June 1, 2018).
Painter Janice L. Moore is the guest curator for this exhibition. She has a had longtime interest in Maine’s work landscapes and how they have shaped us both physically and culturally. Her work has focused on our working factories, abandoned work sites, and repurposed structures throughout the state. Robyn Holman, retired curator of Atrium Gallery, will also take part in the artist selection.

Memory is invoked by many of our senses. For Proust it was the smell of a madeleine. As visual artists, how do we use memory? Do we use memory in a representational way or do we abstract it? Do we paint from memory or photos? Do those photographs in turn produce other memories, which influence our work? The theme of memory seems appropriate to our November member show. The theme is a suggestion, a jumping off point for you.

Recently opened small artist space in Bayside, Portland, and I’m looking for an artist to fill a studio space, available now.
-220sf space with a street front window
-Private with locking door
-Utilities included
-Access to a classroom/teaching space at reduced rental rates
-$475/mo with year lease
The entire space consists of 3 artist studios and a small classroom for creative teaching and learning of many kinds. The studio is best suited to painting, printmaking, textiles, photography, or design/professional creative services, etc. It can’t accommodate flames, kilns, heavy machinery, exhaust fans, etc. Woman/artist owned business.

14th Annual GROW Weekend
GrassRoots Organizing Workshops
Sept. 29th – Oct. 1st
Pine Tree Camp, Rome, ME (Near Belgrade Lakes)
GROW will focus on “Strategies for Lasting Change”. Workshops this year will include but may not be limited to: strategy development/crafting a campaign plan, centering directly affected communities, influencing public policy, organizing democratically, theater of the oppressed, building diverse groups & coalitions, grassroots organizing 101, and more!

The gathering this year will be held again at the beautiful Pine Tree Camp in Rome, which has gorgeous waterfront views, trails for exploring nature, and a kickass tree house for the child in all of us! This camp is also fully accessible and barrier free for people with all abilities. There will also be free child care during workshop slots (register by September 23rd for this option).
The fee for GROW is sliding scale, with a suggested donation of $10-$80 to cover the entire weekend, including workshops, lodging, and meals. No one will be turned away for lack of ability to pay, but if you have the ability to pay more we strongly encourage you to engage in class solidarity as you will be helping folks who struggle to pay and find the fee to be a barrier to attendance. What is class solidarity?
Class refers to where you and your family fit into the world regarding finances (for example: poor, working class, middle class, wealthy, owning class). This event is sponsored by, Resources for Organizing and Social Change, which is a grassroots organization that works on a shoestring budget. We receive few grants and the majority of our fundraising comes from small, grassroots contributions. All of our programming is offered on a sliding scale donation basis that typically goes all the way down to $0, except for the VERY RARE occasion where we have to charge for an event. If you are someone who can donate more because you are middle class or wealthy, please consider doing so. If you do so, you will be engaging in class solidarity.

Studios for Artists: Create, Teach in Portland, ME
Rockland Sculpture Race
Jurors: Suzette McAvoy, Donna McNeil, Michael Komanecky
The first annual Rockland Sculpture Race will be held on August 12th. Individuals, teams, families and community groups are encouraged to submit a design, sketch or photo of actual or proposed human-powered sculptural creation to be pushed, pulled or pedaled. Awards will given for speed, spectacle and ingenuity. This is a family friendly event with the sole purpose of encouraging all things creative, innovative, outlandish, fun and spectacular! Deadline to submit is June 1st.
